The State of New Hampshire

A Proclamation
In the year of our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty-Three
ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH OCTOBER 2023
WHEREAS, Italian American Heritage Month was created by Congress in 1989 to highlight the contributions Italian immigrants and their descendants have made to the history of our country; and
WHEREAS, Italian Americans have contributed greatly to the success of our great nation and the State of New Hampshire in society, business, government, music, and the arts and sciences; and
WHEREAS, bound by enduring values of faith and family, Italian Americans have flourished in all areas of our public and economic life, and nearly 11 percent of Granite Staters claim Italian ancestry making New Hampshire the seventh most Italian American State in the nation; and
WHEREAS, from the first wave of immigrants -- stone masons who honed their craft at New Hampshire's granite quarries, to the fishermen who took to the waters in our Seacoast, to the textile workers who wove world class fabrics in Manchester mills - to present day, Italian Americans have been an integral part of the State of New Hampshire's workforce and continue to make the Granite State the best place to live, work and raise a family; and
WHEREAS, the Italian Americans in Portsmouth were instrumental in creating a passageway in the Piscataqua River so submarines could safely get to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and remained a significant part of the Shipyard workforce; and
WHEREAS, the Granite State has a long history and tradition of standing with the Italian American community to ensure that those in our great state know a way of life that is free from hatred and inequality, and one that embraces all our residents; and
WHEREAS, and during October we take pause to reflect on the contributions, as well as the struggles, hard found and overcome by Italian Americans throughout our nation's history;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, CHRISTOPHER T. SUNUNU, GOVERNOR of the State of New Hampshire, do hereby proclaim OCTOBER 2023 as ITALIAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH in the State of New Hampshire, and call this to the attention of all citizens.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have herunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the State of New Hampshire to be affixed this 26th day of September, 2023.
